POLICE ARE ASKING for witnesses to a fatal collision in West Ham to come forward. It happened on Boxing Day, and led to the death of Julio Silva, who was 89 years old.

Mr Silva was walking across Upton Lane, near the junction with Portway and Plashet Road, E7, when he was hit by a black Ford Focus. He was taken to an East London hospital with serious injuries, but sadly he died on 28th December.

The young driver of the Ford Focus did not stop immediately, but he did return to the scene of the accident later that evening and is now helping police with their inquiries. However, police would like to speak to any witnesses to the accident.

Detective Constable Wendy Hunter from the Roads and Transport Policing Command said, “Mr Silva was in the UK from Portugal visiting family over the Christmas period and was enjoying spending time with his grandson. His family have described him as full of life and greatly missed.

“We have spoken to the driver involved in this incident but are keen to trace further witnesses. There were other vehicles at the traffic lights by the crossroads who may have seen the collision or Mr Silva crossing the road. If you have any information or saw anything please get in touch.”

Anyone who witnessed the accident is asked to contact the Serious Collision Investigation Unit at Chadwell Heath Traffic Garagee on  020-8345 4955 or 020-8597 4874. Alternatively, you can call Crimestoppers on 0800-555 111, where you can give information anonymously.
