A POPULAR brand of French brie has been recalled because it has been contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
Listeria monocytogenes cause symptoms which are similar to flu or food poisoning, such as high temperature, muscle ache, chills, nausea, sickness and diarrhoea. In rare cases the infection can be worse and cause complications such as meningitis.
Some people are more vulnerable to listeria infections, including those over 65 years old, pregnant women and unborn children, and people whose immune system is weakened. The risk is so serious that pregnant women are often advised not to eat brie at all. The symptoms may appear between three and 70 days after infection.
