WHAT WERE WE listening to 50 years ago?
One early number one in 1969 was this catchy little number from Amen Corner, which topped the charts early in the year. The song is little more than its chorus – but it sums up a simple sentiment, and you may catch yourself singing it for days to come.
Amen Corner was together for just three years, with this number one coming towards the end of their life together. Members of the band drifted off into a range of creditable bands of the 1960s and ’70s, with lead singer Andy Fairweather Low going on to a solo career.
Fairweather Low can be seen, in a rare YouTube gem, on Rick Wakeman’s Gastank programme – playing a reggae version of the classic In The Midnight Hour with Godley and Creme (one of their few live appearances). Check it out here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-CiNrN2jBE
