Leyton Orient have moved up into the play-off positions in The Football League Two as an own goal from Ryan Edwards gave Kevin Nolan’s men an important win over 10-man Morecambe. A bright and breezy start at the Matchroom Stadium livened further on 12 minutes as Morecambe goalkeeper Barry Roche saw red after bringing down Jay Simpson in the penalty area. Simpson dusted himself down to take the penalty, but his attempt was saved by Manchester United loanee Kieran O’Hara who had replaced Jamie Devitt after Roche’s dismissal.

Being a man down saw Morecambe revert to a more defensive formation, and despite the home side dominating possession in the first half both teams went into the interval at 0-0. It was 80 minutes before Orient breached The Shrimpers rearguard as a left field cross from the lively Jerome Binnom-Williams fell to Alan Goodall. The full back’s attempt to clear hit Edwards and bounced back into Morecambe net.

Kevin Nolan was happy with the three points. Speaking in his post match interview The O’s boss said: “I think today sort of summed up our home form if you like. We came out, we were doing really well. We then got the man sent off but we didn’t punish them with the penalty. We then became a bit nervous and we started to do things we were not supposed to do. I think they [Morecambe] battled so well, fantastically well if you like, and are probably really disappointed that they couldn’t get a point in the end.

“I’ve just said to the boys when you want to be a successful side, or you want to be a good side or you want to be known as a good side, when you’re not doing the right things the majority of the time, when you’re not playing so well, then to win a game is fantastic. And that’s what they’ve done today. We’ve done it without really playing that well.”
