POLICE WERE UNABLE to establish why Faraz Ahmed, 27, of Fanshawe Avenue, Barking, ran over a young man who was innocently walking back from attending a mosque. Nonetheless, Ahmed was sentenced to eight years imprisonment at Snaresbrook Crown Court.

The victim left the mosque on Victoria Road at around 2pm on 16th September 2016. He crossed Victoria Road at the junction with Fanshawe Avenue, heading towards Barking Town Centre. Ahmed was driving along Fanshawe Avenue: he suddenly swerved, in front of a bus, onto the other side of the road and mounted the pavement.

Ahmed hit the victim with such force that the man was thrown up into the air. The London Ambulance Service was called and the victim was taken to an East London hospital. He was treated for a dislocated shoulder and head injuries and has since recovered and left hospital.

Ahmed did not stop at the scene and continued driving towards Ilford. He then escaped to Dubai, before giving himself up to police on 28th October. Police then interviewed him – but he would not respond to questions.

Surprisingly, Ahmed was then bailed. He returned for a further interview on 27th March this year: one that occasion, he was searched before the interview began and he was found to be in possession of cannabis. The police then charged with grievous bodily harm – and possession of cannabis.

Detective Constable Chris Whiston from the East Area Command Unit’s CID said, “Ahmed showed complete disregard for the safety of those walking along the pavement away from the road. His recklessness has caused significant damage to the victim as he made his way home. He deserves the custodial sentence for this crime.”
