THE METROPOLITAN POLICE has announced the formation of new team to tackle violent crime, weapon-enabled crime and serious criminality. It will be staffed by full-time officers who will be selected for work in this squad.

The Met hopes that the new team will use a range of tactics to identify and arrest offenders – including covert and overt tactics. They will also be targeting known offenders.

The new unit will work with officers in boroughs across London as well as the Trident and Area Crime Command and other specialist units. They will also work with community partners.

The Met previous ran Operation Sceptre, which had two teams – one in North London and one south of the river – which carried out proactive work on knife crime, violent crime and moped-enabled crime in rotation. It hopes the new approach will help solve murders and knife crime – and reduce the incidence of these offences.
