MAYFLOWER SCHOOL in Poplar has held an interfaith assembly conducted by religious and non-religious leaders from the community, who also ran exhibition-style sessions about their faith and beliefs.
Pupils at the school took turns to meet their guests in small groups to learn about interfaith week and different religions. Each visitor was stationed at their own table with information, books, artefacts and objects. They told stories about their own faith and beliefs, which they shared with the children as well as answering questions.
Mayflower school teacher Sirajul Choudhury co-ordinated the event. He commented, “This has been an excellent way to increase understanding between people of religious and non-religious beliefs. I thank our guests for their presence and our staff and children learnt so much. It is important to learn about each other as this is one of the best ways to promote tolerance, respect and harmony between each other.”
Interfaith Week is a time when across the UK the spotlight falls on faith communities and interfaith activity, including engagement between those of religious and non-religious beliefs.
It is a time for strengthening good interfaith relations at all levels while increasing awareness of the different and distinct faith communities in the UK, in particular celebrating and building on the contribution which their members make to their neighbourhoods and to wider society.
Faiths represented on the day included Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Sikhism, Buddhism and Humanism. During the assembly the school was presented with the player issue shirt worn by Emdad Rahman during the recent Essex Vatican Tour which saw an interfaith team represent Essex and play St Peter’s CC – Pope Francis’s team – and also Roma Capannelle CC.
