Karim Samms – an open case, one year on

POLICE ARE still trying to find out who murdered Newham teenager Karim Samms – who died in Roebourne Way, E16, late on 7th April 2017. He died from a gunshot wound to the chest.

Another young man had been shot in Claremont Close earlier that evening. He needed hospital treatment, but was not admitted as an in-patient. Police believe that both were shot in the same incident, at Pier Parade – and it was gunshots from this incident which were heard by local residents, prompting them to call the police.

Shortly after the murder, police released some CCTV footage. This shows a Nissan Juke drive into a car park. Two suspects then approach a group of youngsters, one of whom was Karim Samms. The suspects appear to produce a gun, after which most of the group run off. The Nissan drives off, at speed, shortly after.

Detective Chief Inspector John Marriott, who is leading the Homicide and Major Crime Command investigation into Karim’s murder, said, “We previously released CCTV footage in the lead up to Karim’s brutal murder and said at the time that we are keen to hear from anyone who may have seen a dark coloured Nissan Juke in the area, which we believe carried the suspects to and from the scene.

“We still want to hear from anyone who may have been afraid to come forward at the time and can guarantee that any information that is provided to us is held in the strictest confidence.”

“Karim’s family have been left devastated by this senseless act that has left a 16 year old boy dead before his life had properly begun. It is up to us to find justice for his family.”

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information is asked to contact the Incident Room on 020-83453715. Alternatively, you can call Crimestoppers on 0800-555 111, where you can give information anonymously.
