IT WAS an inspiring night at the Island Network’s Fourth Education Awards on 31st August. The Network has long been at the heart of the community in Cubitt Town, playing a particularly strong role during the Covid pandemic.
These Awards, however, were a moment to celebrate local youth. Young people had done themselves, their teachers and their parents proud with outstanding GCSE and “A”‑level achievements. Many are now heading to Oxford, Cambridge and leading universities.
Deputy Mayor Cllr Maium Talukdar, a former Cabinet Member for Children’s Services and Education, was also present. The Awards took place just yards from where he grew up and where he went to primary school. He is a real role model to young people in Cubitt Town, an example of what can be achieved through consistent hard work.
Those present heard inspirational words from a former Deputy Young Mayor who is now going to Oxford University, along with motivating messages from current Oxford students. Parents were also recognised for their dedication and support.
Thanks were extended to Friends of Cubitt Town Abdul Malik, Faruk Ali, Mohin Uddin, Sanwar Ahmed for hosting a fantastic community celebration.
