The Glamis Residents Association held a summer barbecue for local people in Shadwell and to help create a sense of positive community spirit.

Over the course of the day almost three hundred residents visited the Gordon House Green despite it being mostly a wet and windy day.

Apart from a hot food stall managed by volunteers from the Docklands Community Initiative Foodbank team, there were stalls displaying arts and crafts, cakes and sweet treats, as well as an open raffle with prizes.

A group of youngsters were instrumental in leading a community litter pick to raise awareness of the benefits of a clean neighbourhood.

Docklands Community Initiatives Operations and Logistics Manager Sunu Miah was pleased with how the day unfolded.

He said, “We were nervous and sceptical with the weather forecast but things worked out very well as we made good use of the green space at our disposal.

“The people turned up in their droves to celebrate, and enjoy themselves and as a result a great spirit of unity and friendliness was created. It was refreshing and special to engage with so many people with so many smiles.”

The Docklands Community Initiative is a Tower Hamlets Foodbank run entirely by volunteers who serve those who are vulnerable and facing hardship.
