The Tower Hamlets Citizens Community and Relations Group received great plaudits and recognition at the annual Excel Awards 2014. The evening at Care House in London E1 celebrated the achievements of young and old alike. The group has carried out a great deal of work to engage Tower hamlets residents, including a ground breaking project that has bought neighbours from all backgrounds together. Those from the team who attended the awards were Marie Larvin (E1 Community Church), Tariq Abdullah (Darul Ummah), Jusna Begun (Darul Ummah), Khoyrul Shaheed (Darul Ummah) and Jonathan Smith (Salvation Army, Stepney).

Khoyrul Shaheed said: “Under no circumstances do we allow faith, lack of faith, colour or creed stop enjoining our community to do good. I’m proud of working with this amazing group of people. I would like to thank our fellows: Liam Harney (Queen Mary University of London), Michal Sieratzky (Our Lady of the Assumption Bethnal Green), Courtney (Queen Mary University of London) for their hard work in helping us to achieve this.”

Sotez Chowdhury, London Citizens organiser from Queen Mary University of London, added: “It is not only flattering to be recognised for the efforts made by leaders from our members in Tower Hamlets Citizens but also inspiring to be in a room of great talents being celebrated. It was also very uplifting to see Dawatul Islam and the Excel Awards taking the initiative to celebrate the achievements of the community which is so often overlooked.”
