A CONVICTION FOR common assault has led to PC Ajay Singh, who had been working with the East Area Command Unit, being dismissed from the Metropolitan Police at a special case hearing just before Christmas.

The conviction arose after PC Singh arrested a man on 28th October 2016 on suspicion of assault. The man was put in handcuffs and taken to a police station, where PC Singh sprayed him in the face with CS spray.

PC Singh was then charged with common assault. He attended the City of London Magistrates’ Court on 1st August last year, where he was convicted of the charge and sentenced to a 12 month conditional discharge. He appealed the conviction, but on 19th October his appeal was dismissed with an order that PC Singh pay the additional costs of the appeal.

At a disciplinary hearing on 15th December, PC Singh was found guilty of having breached the Metropolitan Police standards of behaviour in respect of authority, respect and courtesy; of discreditable conduct; and use of force. He was dismissed from the Metropolitan Police without notice and has been placed on the Police Barred List, preventing him from obtaining employment in policing in the future.
