Council tells residents: help yourselves

TOWER HAMLETS COUNCIL has urged residents to use the New Year to make a fresh start and give up smoking and curb their drinking of alcohol.

Labour’s John Biggs promoted the stance by warning residents to pull their socks up now the New Year is here, saying, “Whilst the holidays are a time to let go and enjoy ourselves, there is a wide variety of free local services that can help you achieve your New Year goals. Whatever your resolution is, you are more likely to succeed with support so have a chat with your pharmacist or GP at any time.”

It is welcome to see that John Biggs does recognise the value of the smoking cessation support service by suggesting that everyone considering stopping smoking should use it. His advice comes after last year’s consultation on public health spending, when he proposed cutting back the funding of smoking cessation support services, reducing the number of people who could use the service.
