Those with a little bit of time to spare over the summer can indulge themselves in a science extravaganza (or, at least, three special shows) right on our doorstep in Whitechapel. From microbes to molars, cutting-edge trauma surgery to 100-year-old killer diseases – there’s something to interest all budding scientists at Queen Mary University of London’s family science centre, Centre of the Cell, this summer holiday. There’s a choice of three workshops which will be running from 5th August to 4th September.

Sores, Spores and Sickly Bugs is a free to attend session uncovering 100 years of miraculous medical history in the East End, through hands-on activities. Young visitors can find out about the lives of east London children in the 1900s – how they lived, where they worked and what illnesses they suffered from. Workshop leaders will help participants explore breakthrough discoveries and changes to medical practice to understand how this affects our lives today. Funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, these workshops have been researched, designed, and will be led by, a team of young people aged 16-18 from east London.

Microbe Detectives allows you to take on the role of a scientist and complete brain-busting challenges and puzzles to find out which monster microbe has made a patient very ill. The Trauma Show  has been developed with the trauma research team at Queen Mary’s medical school, Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry. This interactive science show is pumped full of amazing science facts and demonstrations about blood, traumatic injuries, and the fight to save lives. Admission to Mircrobe Detectives and to The Trauma Show is £7 (£5 concessions) each. Further workshops on snot, sick and scabs, teeth, the senses, and air pollution also take place across the summer. The events are recommended for families and children aged 7 and up. Please note that children under the age of 14 must be accompanied by a responsible adult (aged 16+) at all times.
