IN THE EARLY HOURS of Monday, 29th May the London Fire Brigade dealt with a vehicle which had caught fire in a car park in Castleton Road, Ilford. Just before 6am, the firefighters called the police as a body had been found near the vehicle.
The body is thought to be that of a 54 year old man, who was pronounced dead at the scene. Following a post mortem held the following day, the cause of death was established as a “blunt force trauma”: in other words, the man did not die as a result of the car fire, and it seems that he was attacked, possibly murdered.
Police are looking for his next of kin and formal identification has not yet taken place. Detectives from the Homicide and Major Crime Command are now investigating the incident – and they need help from the public to piece together what happened.
Detective Chief Inspector Laurence Smith, who is leading the investigation, said, “I would like to hear from anyone who witnessed anything suspicious in and around Castleton Road and Green Lane from the evening of Sunday, 28th May, into the early hours of the next day. Even if you think your information won’t be of use, I would urge you to make contact and share that information with us.”
If you can help identify the victim and/or his next of kin, if you were near the car park or have any information, please contact the incident room on 020-8345 3985 or phone the general non-urgent police number 101. To give information anonymously, phone Crimestoppers on 0800-555 111 or upload your information on www.crimestoppers-uk.org.
