A CRUEL COURIER CON has seen an elderly man lose over £2,500. The con began on 17th November last year when a man in his 80s, who lives in Bermondsey, received a phone call from someone claiming to be Hammersmith police.
The caller told the man that someone had been using his credit and debit cards for fraudulent purposes – and a courier would come to his home and collect them. The victim was persuaded to tell the caller his PIN number and then handed his cards over to a “courier” who came to his home.
Of course the fraudulent activity had not occurred before the phone call – it all happened afterwards. The cards which the fake courier collected were used in a number of shops in East London.
Police have now released a CCTV image of a man they wish to speak to in connection with the con. They believe he is the man who attended the victim’s house and pretended to be a courier sent by the police.
The suspect is described as an Asian male, aged between 25 and 35 years old. He had a black beard and was wearing a black anorak.
•Anyone who believes they may recognise the man in the picture or who has any other information which may help police find the con man – before he takes money from another vulnerable pensioner – is asked to contact Walworth CID via 101.
