June 22, 2016

During this holy month of Ramadan, The Baraka Khan Foundation and The London Muslim Centre (LMC) have announced that they will be working in partnership to plan the establishment of The Baraka Khan Visitor Gallery (the BKVG).

The BKVG will be a place to host exhibitions on the common religious heritage of the Abrahamic faiths; to promote multi-faith dialogue; and to support community engagement projects. It will also serve as a visitors’ centre and as a memorial to the late Baraka Khan, 23rd August 1991-18th February 2016.

Baraka was proud to be British and Muslim and was deeply committed to public service – serving her local community and her beloved country with immense pride. She took every chance to increase the understanding between different faiths and cultures. During her lifetime, she had an innate ability to connect with people from all backgrounds, inspiring those around her to do good.

Baraka raised over half a million pounds for causes she held dear, supporting projects ranging from Macmillan Cancer Support and Great Ormond Street Hospital to the Cambridge Eco-Mosque Project. It is the aim of The Baraka Khan Foundation to continue this legacy of doing good in the fields of education, faith and healing as well as working for other causes.

The Visitor Centre project, which is The Foundation’s second partnership with LMC, will gradually expand to create greater space for exhibitions on faith and education. In its second phase, the Baraka Khan Visitor Gallery hopes to include part of the vacated site of the neighbouring synagogue when it is eventually redeveloped. The synagogue was due to be sold to property developers, but the London Muslim Centre stepped in to purchase it for the community. Expanding the Baraka Khan Visitor Gallery will be a tribute to her enduring legacy, recognising our local heritage, and bringing faith communities together. Baraka, like her name, continues to be a true blessing.

The LMC and The Baraka Khan Foundation aim to create a space that is open for all, no matter their religion, ethnicity or cultural background. The project will aim to increase an understanding on our common legacy as children of Adam and build an alliance of goodness.
