A MAN WAS shot dead at an Esso garage in Romford in the early hours of this morning – after roaming round the Collier Row area claiming that he had a gun and making threats. He is understood to have been in his 40s.

The incident began at approximately 3.50am, when a call was made to the emergency services requesting that police attend a property in Collier Row. When the police arrived, they were told the man had moved on – and he did have a gun.

The shooting happened at the Esso garage at 4.45am and the man was pronounced dead half an hour later. Locals reported hearing gunshots and seeing lots of blue flashing lights. Eye witnesses reported seeing police at the petrol station, with a white tarpaulin on the ground.

The London Ambulance Service confirmed that it had sent a number of units to the scene, including a road crew from the air ambulance service. It is understood that the man who was shot was given emergency treatment by paramedics before he died.

Police officers continued to come to and go from the garage this morning – including forensics staff wearing white cover-alls. Roads around Collier Row Road, Lodge Lane and Melville Road were closed this morning.

In accordance with standard practice, the incident has been reported to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) and to the Metropolitan Police Directorate of Professional Standards. The IOPC confirmed that it had begun an investigation and its staff were already at the scene.
