AUGUST BEGAN with a colourful splash as top practitioners from across the food scene stepped forward to collect their first ever Asian Food and Restaurant (AFRA) awards during a glittering gala night at London’s Montcalm Hotel.
South Asians made a huge contribution to the UK food industry – and, therefore, not only to the feeding of the nation but also to our social lives. The delicious meals, snacks and treats which these experts churn out are there to be eaten and to entertain and delight us as we share food with friends and family and bring the community closer together.
AFRA has launched these awards to ensure that the South Asian contribution is recognised and applauded – both in terms of the end products but also in terms of the stories of what our practitioners have gone through to bring their food to the tables of the UK. Dedication and commitment from some very determined people have brought us the tasty treats we enjoy today.
The gala night was hosted by Pakistani actress Ayesha Sana and Sunrise Radio presenter Anushka Arora. Guests included Virendra Sharma MP, singer H. Dhami and international star magician Magic Singh.
Mr A Haq, Chair of the Asian Food and Restaurant Awards, said, “I would like to congratulate all the participants and stakeholders of the food industry for their huge contribute for setting legendary benchmarks, be they the waiters, the chefs or the owners.”
Now all we have to do is to wait for next year – and spend the next twelve months doing some serious research into the wonderful flavours that South Asia has brought to this little European island.
