Young Leaders umpire at LYG cricket finals

Two students from Stepney Green Sixth Form, Abul Hasnat and Emad Uddin, joined other aspiring coaches and umpires at the London Youth Games Cricket Umpiring Award on Saturday 16th January. The event was held at the home of cricket – Lords. The pair learnt the intricacies of the London Youth Games rules and regulations in both theory and practical sessions.

Following their training, both students were invited to umpire at the London Youth Games Cricket Qualifiers weekends on 30th/31st January and 6/7th February at Harrow Leisure Centre. This provided the youngsters with a fantastic opportunity to put their new skills into practice by working with boys and girls teams from boroughs across London.

In recognition of their effort and commitment, the two students were invited back to Lords to attend the LYG Cricket Finals held on Sunday, 28th February – where they were presented with a certificate to mark their achievements.

Abul and Emad are both actively engaged in the Stepping Stones programme through Tower Hamlets Youth Sport Foundation. Over the February half term they attended a Cricket Coach Support Worker Course alongside other young leaders from the borough. This course was held at Play On Sports in Whitechapel and was delivered in partnership with Middlesex CCC and the LBTH Positive Activities for Young People programme.

Both students will have the opportunity to continue to develop their umpiring and coaching skills by working with THYSF Cricket Development Officer, Jahid Ahmed, to support cricket programmes across Tower Hamlets.
