New learning pack energises students

A group of sixty pupils from Cayley Primary School descended on Victoria Park last week, where they road tested a new learning pack and workbook devised by Tower Hamlets Council in partnership with the Heritage Lottery Fund. The pack includes a series of lesson plans to help children fulfil requirements of the Key Stage 3 National Curriculum in engaging and creative ways, but it also introduces these young residents to key features of Victoria Park.

Tahirah Nasrin, aged 8, said: “I really enjoyed the work book. It led us to the lake where we saw tadpoles, ducks, frogs and brightly coloured dragonflies. This was a great new experience for me.”

Teacher Ben Sperring added: “We had a really nice time on our day out at Victoria Park. The new work booklet was very appealing to the kids and it’s great that there’s a café in the Hub for the teachers. It’s nice to have a resource for learning in such a nice park.”

Mayor of Tower Hamlets, Lutfur Rahman said: “Victoria Park is an amazing space for residents and visitors to enjoy and learn from. I hope pupils will find the learning pack and work book fun and engaging and that it will enable them to explore the park further.”

During Mayor Rahman’s time in office, Victoria Park has benefitted from a £12 million pound revamp and has won the People’s Choice Award for best park in London. The park hosts a wide range of formal and informal sports, sponsored activities, events and festivals throughout the year as well as being open for residents to enjoy a quiet stroll or sitting out in the sun.
