Is it all over for glyphosate?

The September issue of The Voice, newsletter of the East London Garden Society (ELGS) is out – bringing the shocking news that glyphosate may find its days are numbered. Paul Stamets, an innovative mycologist (mushroom man) has identified a naturally occurring fungus which kills insects, and he’s now developed a form which can be used as an insecticide – a very safe alternative to dubious chemical solutions.

In current news, ELGS’s Geoff Juden reports that community campaigning has resulted in a small but significant victory for clean air, under threat from the felling of trees along Mile End Road to provide a cycle highway. Ongoing campaigns which ELGS is supporting include the campaign to get a Forest Garden in the Bishopsgate Goodsyard development and the campaign to save Southwark Woods from its council, which wants to use the land for burial plots – a worthy cause, but not at the expense of the environment. There’s news of an unwelcome attempt to lay Astroturf in Ford Square and an attack on the ornamental ponds of Hampstead Heath.
