Trade unions have been trying to halt the decrease in private pensions - which makes state pensions even more important to many older workers.

Government clobbers pensioners

THE GOVERNMENT  has been under great pressure in recent weeks from a group of women who facing waiting extra years before they receive the state pension.

The women claimed that they had been relying on receiving their pension at a certain age and only found out late in life that there would be a delay before they could receive it – too late for them to change their plans and work long enough to compensate for the delay.

How has the Government responded? It has this afternoon announced that the UK State Pension Age will increase from 67 to 68 seven years earlier. The increase will now take effect in 2037. Anyone now aged 47 or over and has a manual job will not get their pension until they are 68.

The small number of people in well paid desk jobs who can work until they are aged 68 will probably not mind too much. The news is a blow to those involved in manual labour. Those currently aged over 47 and work as cleaners, school cooks, refuse operatives, lorry drivers, etc., will not have time to retrain to become insurance clerks and headteachers. They now face having to carry out their heavy work until they are aged 68.

As Theresa May is probably thinking, while she collects her £150,000+ annual salary, we all have to make sacrifices.
