Charity is the winner at Muslim Charity Run

Emdad Rahman

VICTORIA PARK – renowned for its heritage, recreational facilities, Pagoda and lake – once again hosted the annual Muslim Charity Run as runners of all age groups took part in a community fun run.

The Run and Fun Day organised by the East London Mosque is an opportunity for the community to get together and raise awareness of important health issues. The event also enables runners to raise funds for their favourite charities, whether it’s a local or global cause.

A fun day saw hundreds of runners pound the tarmac to complete the course. Each runner was presented with a specially crafted medal to celebrate their achievements in not only completing the run but also as a thank you for their fundraising efforts.

Charities in attendance included the Human Relief Foundation and Human Appeal, as well as the 8th East London Scouts Group and Jamiatul Ummah.

MCR 2Dr Abdul Bari also took part and provided insight into the community event, saying, “I came late but I participated, with one lap. It’s a fun run and the whole purpose is to engage people into participating in community activities. This event promotes fitness and wellbeing, and I’m pleased to see such a good turn out. In reality our numbers are lower this year, and this is where we can all be productive and analyse and work with establishments such as youth centres and Mosques to plan how better we can engage with our community members and in future increase the numbers of people taking an interest in their health.”

Councillor Sirajul Islam, Tower Hamlets Deputy Mayor, commented, “It’s very nice to be a part of the whole family here today. It’s a fun-filled atmosphere with lots of activities with the overall aim to raise money for charity. There’s an added bonus with people running, keeping fit, improving their well being and benefitting needy charitable causes. Well done everybody.”

Shaikh Abdul Qayyum, the Imam of the East London Mosque, was full of praise for everyone who had participated to make the event so successful. “Everyone has worked very hard and everyone will surely feel rewarded for their efforts,” he concluded.
