Acid attack arrests update

The following arrests and charges have been made over the last few days in connection with “acid attacks” – the use of noxious liquids to disarm victims to facilitate robbery.

A 15 year old boy was arrested on 14th July at an address in Stoke Newington on suspicion of grievous bodily harm and robbery. He has been released on bail until early August.

A 16 year old boy [A] was charged with a staggering 15 criminal offences on 15th July. These were:
•three counts of robbery;
•four counts of attempted robbery;
•one count of possession of an item to discharge a noxious substance;
•five counts of attempted GBH with intent;
•one count of GBH with intent and
•one count of handling stolen goods.

He was remanded in custody to appear before Stratford Youth Court on Monday, 17 July.

Mustafa Ahmed, 19, of Musbury Street, E1, was arrested on 16th July and charged the following day with one count of wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm (GBH) and one count of attempted wounding with intent to do GBH. The charges arose out of an incident in Burdett Road, E3, on 4th July, when a man and woman were attacked with a noxious substance. Both were treated in hospital and have since been released. Ahmed is being held in custody and was due to appear at Thames Magistrates’ Court on 18th July. A 19 year old man was arrested on 13th July and has been released while investigations continue. Two more men were arrested on 16th July – one 18, one 19 – and both have been released while investigations continue.

A vehicle containing four young men was stopped by police officers on patrol in Worsley Road Leytonstone, E11 just before 9pm on 19th July. The four teenagers, two aged 17 and two aged 18, were searched and found to be in possession of a suspected corrosive substance. The substance was in a bottle and with it were a balaclava and a pair of gloves. The four were arrested and taken to an East London police station.
